Beyond “Girl Boss”: Why Including Women is the Smartest Move You’ll Make

International Women’s Day 2024 calls for #InspireInclusion. This theme resonates deeply with me as I believe true progress happens when we not only celebrate women’s achievements, but also actively foster an environment where women feel included, empowered, and valued. It is well known that women hold the power to drive positive change, and investing in women entrepreneurs and community leaders is not just the right thing to do, it’s a recipe for progress.

Money4YOU’s panel discussion on March 8, 2024, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress through Bid Writing and Grantmaking,” served as a powerful testament to this idea. Fiona Murray, a seasoned leader with a global perspective, and Shofa, a passionate advocate for youth and community voices, shared their journeys and expertise.

Inspiring Inclusion Through Action:

  1. Amplifying Diverse Voices: The discussion highlighted the importance of diverse perspectives. When women from different backgrounds feel included in the conversation, the solutions we develop are richer, more impactful, and more likely to achieve lasting change.
  2. Empowering Through Knowledge: Securing funding can be a significant hurdle for women leaders. Our panelists offered practical tips on bid writing and grantmaking, equipping women to confidently navigate this crucial process and turn their visions into reality.
  3. Breaking Down Barriers: We explored the concept of decolonising aid and philanthropy. This means moving towards funding models that prioritise community ownership and empower local voices.
  4. Building Bridges, Not Walls: Inclusion is a two-way street. We encourage men and allies to join the conversation, advocate for gender equality, and champion the initiatives of women leaders.

Bonus #TopTips for Social Impact Founders:

  • Know Your Worth, Tell Your Story: Don’t underestimate the power of your vision! Women’s leadership is crucial for positive change. Craft compelling narratives that showcase the impact your project will have on the community.
  • Deconstruct the Bid Writing and Grantmaking Process: The process can seem daunting, but by following a step-by-step approach, you can break it down into manageable tasks. P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S. (Plan, Research, Offer a Compelling Story, Goals & Outcomes, Realistic Budget & Timeline, Edit & Proofread Thoroughly, Submit Well Before Deadline & Seek Support When Needed) is a helpful acronym to remember.
  • Decolonise Your Approach: Seek funding that empowers local voices and fosters community ownership. Advocate for a more equitable system where communities identify their needs and choose the solutions that best serve them.
